Also there is Lake Siskiyou near Shasta City, it has a lot of water activities. Also worth visitng is Burney falls, its about 50 miles from Mt Shasta.

Cheers

I drove from bay area, visited Lassen Volcanic National Park, then north to Burney Falls and continue to Mt Shashta.

From there went to Crater Lake and back.

You can also plan to visit Shasta Caverns on way back from Crater Lake.

Hope that helps

Crater Lake and Mount Shasta are both beautiful place - beautiful drive - very scenic.
Specially the drive to crater lake is amazing. There is a boat tour to Crater Lake Island - check that out.

Drive on I-5 is scenic - once you are further up north - its beautiful specially once you leave Redding. Other ideas:

Stay closer to Crate Lake and camping - that would be fun
Ashland, OR isn’t far from there and is an awesome town
There are caves at Shasta that you can explore (Shasta taverns)
Dunsmuir and the surround areas are great.
Castle Crags state park
Shasta Mountain, Mount Shasta City, worth a visit, drive up to Bunny Flats for a good view of the hill.

Have fun!

Wanted to update:
Activites: You could do rafting - level 1-2 on the rogue river - its good fun.
Also, camping if you are adventurous. Lot of camp grounds in the neighbourhood. And Hiking in the Rogue-Umpqua scenic way - just beautiful.

Sight-seeing::
Ashland is a beautiful town to stay - close to crater lake.
Dont miss out on the caves at Shasta - I really enjoed them.
Dunsmuir and Castle Crags state park are worth a visit as well.
